A friend of mine recently told me a story about how in 1962, 6 months after her mother passed, she was 14 and the kids in her school were discussing what to wear to the dance. Her father sat her down to tell her he was called back in to service and she would have to live with relatives. He told her that he made a commitment to his country above all else and she would have to live with the repercussions of his commitment, whatever the outcome.

War has always been a terrible thing, it can ruin lives and it steals from the young. As time passes, I find it easier to understand people who think differently than myself. It is easy for civilians like us to misunderstand soldiers although respecting their service and sacrifice has come to overshadow that with time for me. Thinking about the children ( the young and the grown) who lost parents or who had friends who lost parents is heartbreaking. Our hearts are with the children of fallen soldiers this memorial day.
